Dinner Decisions Part 1

Whats for Dinner?

Wanna hear a joke about pizza?

                                                                      ...Never mind it’s too cheesy!

So, who has been eating frozen pizzas for dinner?  ME!  I love pizza because my kids will actually eat it and not complain!  PLUS, it is inexpensive and quick to prepare. But sadly, it is not the healthiest choice.  Pizza delivery?  That's even better, but it gets $$$ pretty quickly! This Assignment will have a few parts.

TASK Part 1:  Virtual Shopping
TASK Part 2:  Costing the recipe you will make

One of our family's favourites:  Frozen pizza, ready in 15 minutes!  $3.50 x 2!  Great deal, 2 pizzas for a quick meal!  These save time and money!  But the other pizzas like pepperoni are high in salt and fat, higher in saturated fat than we would prefer.

Mise en place for No yeast pizza dough:
Ingredinets: Bread flour, wholewheat flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, olive oil, water

Stir together to form a soft dough.  Roll out dough into a circle to fit pan or pizza stone, spread on tomato sauce and dried oregano, added toppings.  We used grated cheddar, parmesan, left over gound beef, pepperoni sticks, yellow peppers.  Bake for about 10 minutes. Served Hot!

At the end of this assignment, one of the goals is for you to EVALUATE if it is worthwhile for you to make HOMEMADE vs. BUY from a grocery store or get take out. Do you have time?  Price? Nutrition? Convenience? Taste?  Decide on how each choice have pros and cons as you make your Dinner Decisions!

(If Romano cheese is not available, substitute with Parmesan)

Use any noodles that you already have at home, or different shaped pastas.  Alfredo sauce clings to noodles nicely.  Choose Wholewheat pastas for more fibre and nutrients. What is the diff. between Spaghetti and Spaghettini, or Fettuccini and Lunguini?

Allow water to come to a full, rolling boil before adding pasta.  Ensure there is plenty of water to circulate noodles. Cook unti they are AL DENTE.

A QUICK and delicious meal if you enjoy Alfredo sauce, thin with milk if the sauce is too thick. Creamo (10% fat) can be used to replace Whipping cream (35% fat)  for a lower calorie dish. Choose a different sauce if this does not suit your family's taste.

Serve the Fettuccini Alfredo HOT with a salad

Cooking with Mrs. Anthony

Welcome to Joyful Cooking! I am so excited to share my passion for cooking with you, specifically, with children! A little about me, I am a mom of 2 boys, aged 8 and 11.  They are full of boundless energy and antics!  My husband is a professional working full time, and I am a part-time public school teacher.  I have been trained as a Home Economics teacher and worked as a high school Culinary instructor full time until my children were born.  I choose to be part-time because I value my time with the kids as they grow.    My first memories of cooking were of my mother preparing rice dumplings in our tiny apartment kitchen.  (See this link for a famous Singaporean vendor for   Dragon Boat Rice Dumplings )  I always wondered how she was able to wrap those bundles with nimble hands without losing a morsel.  One of my most  precious memories is of my grandmother, I watched in fascination as she created noodles from ...
